The Tour de France has started and so has your local superweek of cycling – Velopalooza 2016. Huge congrats to Globe BMX Raceway for hosting the first BMX Sask Cup event since the 1990’s – so awesome.
On tap for Monday July 4th is the “Time Zone” 10km ITT. Sign on is at the start line and you can do the event with either a STAC (triathlon membership) or SCA (cycling membership) – just visit the registration table for the membership to which you belong.
Other exciting news is that we have secured the Saskatoon Track and Trail Motorcross Park for the “SandLander Fatbike” partner relay for Thursday night. You must be an SCA general (or race member) for this event and sign on is on site at the parking for the trail network which is between Beaver Creek and Dakota Dunes Casino on Highway 219 – look for the signs on you right as you head out. The terrain is quite sandy but the loop we have selected is pretty rideable and not technical with a combination of rolling single track and some double track – it is very similar to the terrain at Cranberry Flats. Check out the event page for more information.
Online registration is now available for next weekends Cyclocross Craze on Friday evening and the Saskatoon Gravelo Saturday morning. Also be sure to get signed up for the Prairie Gran Fondo – they have distances of 45km, 75km, 115km and 165km – the shorter two distances include a stop of Saskatoon Berry pie at the berry barn. New for 2016 for the longer two distances is the Team Challenge competition Gather 4 friends and form a team and compete against other teams for overall combined finish time of the top 3 of your 4 riders.

Wow – Velopalooza 2016 is less than a week away. Exciting news with the addition of the Globe BMX Raceway Sask Cup event on the long weekend the Velopalooza activities will be starting early and going over 8 days this year!!!! Go check out the fast and furious action at the Globe BMX Raceway.
Other exciting news for this years event includes more social riding events including the return of the Urban Brevet hosted by the Saskatoon Cycling Club and the new to Velopalooza “Go Slowroll”. Checkout the full schedule at: http://www.saskatoonsuperweek.ca/?page_id=10
Velopalooza weekend edition will take place on Friday July 8-10th with the Go Slow Roll and Cyclocross craze (registration open) events on Friday night, the Saskatoon Gravelo on Saturday morning, the “Man of Trees Trail Network” Cleanup day at Richard St. Barbe Baker in the afternoon, some Hard Court Bike Polo action Saturday afternoon, and capped off with the Prairie Gran Fondo on Sunday morning.
On a slightly sad note there will be no Little Fitty this year as we were unable to arrange a host club but hopefully we can return to the motorcar speedway next year. In its place we are still working on details of a partner relay style fatbike event out at the Motorcross park. Stayed tuned as we hope to provide an update to this event later this week.
Stay cool – go ride your bike
So far the smoke is holding off with a AQHI of 5 and forecast high of 7 for the Cycledelia classic Tuesday nighter tonight on the East Course. There will be a newcomer group that will ride a shorter distance and some instruction provided along with a short race opportunity. Experienced riders will split up into groups of similar ability (hopefully around 8 to a group) and will get set off with a specific head start and will hope to hold off the chasing groups. Drinks, grub and stories of the race are set for Amigos later in the evening. Check out the Road race page for more details
Tomorrow Velopalooza will conclude with the NBR Mtn bike race at the Forest of Fun (FOF) trails just North of spadina between Ravine Drive and the North Meewasin Shelter. If trails are not your thing then link up with the Saskatoon Cycling Club for an Urban Brevit. Go visit the Urban Brevit page for details.
Fun night last night with a nice tailwind at the Zone Performance Multisport / Cycedelia Road Racing Club – 10km ITT result below. Thanks to Brad and Karen and everyone who came out to volunteer last night

What a palooza weekend of two wheels!!
Following up on the excitement of friday nights Cyclocross Craze and BMX experience riders took to the gravel roads east of Saskatoon for the Saskatoon Gravelo. Unfortunately, smoke rolled in over night and the AQHI bumped up from 2/10 at 7AM to 8/10 and 10AM race start. A call was made to turn the race into a ride and encouraged any participants that wanted to continue with the event to ride at easy pace and cut the day short if they noticed any effects of the smoke. Big shooutout to Brad and Carol from Ottawa who found www.saskatoonsuperweek.ca and embraced the “try a new experience” concept. They borrowed some bikes and took part in the cyclocross and gravel events – neither Brad nor Carol had done an event on gravel or grass before – Bravo. Special thanks to Cuylar Conly and the Range Road Racing Crew for the great volunteer support and a really fun mix of gravel and pavement. I think we met two cars the whole 50km!
Saturday velopalooza activites continued over at Optimist park with the NA Hard court bike polo qualifier – Polo on the Prairies.https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10153498249966917&set=pcb.785992334851568&type=1&theater
Congrats to the local gang “Mosquitios” who captured the title and Les petits gateaux for capturing 3rd place https://instagram.com/p/4yBCTlDcQT/
The smoke cleared overnight Saturday to leave clear blue skies for the Sunday SIGA Prairie Gran Fondo. A great day hosted by the Horizon100 Cycling Club and it lived up to its moniker as participants certainly had opportunity to “lock horns with the prairie winds”. Many folks rode further than they have ridden before and plenty of great activities around the finish line to assist in the celebration.
Tonight the race against the clock – the individual time trial will occur on the Casino Highway will be hosted by Zone Performance Multisport and Cycledelia Road Racing Club – you can participate either as a STAC or SCA participant. Tuesday night will be the Classic Road Race on the East course – note that there is a learn to road race group where you can come out and learn a bit about road racing and even get a little sampling of racing for yourself, why just watch the tour de france when you can actually experience road racing? Velopalooza 2015 will conclude on Wed with the NBR mountain bike race at the forest of fun and for those that are not into taking to the single track then check out then new Saskatoon Cycling Club Urban Brevit.
Details for all events can be found in the schedule and events pages here at www.saskatoonsuperweek.ca

All events are structured to accommodate a wide range of cycilsts – from beginner/novice to seasoned experts. This week is all out fun and mostly about participation and having new experiences on your bike. Events can be raced or just ridden leisurely – you choose how you want to approach each event.

Some special announcements regarding the week:
- We are currently monitoring the smoke and weather and will update here and on the Velopalooza FB page if any cancellations or changes are required.
- TransCanadaDay Trail rides – some folks have been inquiring about what bike to ride. If you are doing the Fatlanders TCT Romp then you will mostly be riding single track so want to ride a mtn bike or a Fatbike or if you just want to stay to the crusher dust and easy single track then a cross bike would also work. For the Saskatoon Cycling Club Ramble then any bike will work – this will not involve any single track but portions of the TCT to Wanuskewan are crusher dust. See event pages for start times and details
- Little Fitty Relay has added the Itty Bitty Fitty – a new 2 person youth relay to go at 6:10pm for kids – 10-16 yrs of age. This will be 15min + 1lap event, non-drafting, switch every lap relay. So bring your kids out and let them romp the track as well.
- Little Fitty Relay – time to secure your teammates – drop us a note on the FB page or email firstname.lastname@example.org with your event choice, team name and members. If you don’t have a team- no problem – drop us a note which event you would like to do and we will team up at the event
- Craze Friday is set for Lakewood civic center and big shoutout to GLOBE BMX Raceway for adding a BMX demo to the Craze Friday activities. Do the cyclocross event then head over the BMX track next to the finish line for 7:30 to see some BMX skill demonstrations and give it a try yourself. Bring your mtn bike if you want to try the track and also you will need a full helmet (a few will be available to borrow) but bring one if you have one. Both events have activities/events for kids
- Saturday Gravelo – welcome Range Road Racing as the host of the 2nd annual Gravelo (a mix of gravel and pavement). They have devised a super fun 50km course in the strawberry hills just east of Saskatoon that is partly pavement and partly gravel but all built on the foundation of fun. Maps and details now up on the webpage and FB event page. Proceeds will help go to funding their athletes at upcoming events
- SIGA Prairie Gran Fondo – is all set to go for Sunday – you can still get signed up to ride the bloom of the Prairies, There is even two categories that offer pie at the berry barn!!!
More on next weeks activities to come shortly.
Get ready to have some fun on your bikes peeps!!!
Hoping everyone is starting to look forward to the 2015 Velopalooza Superweek of Cycling – it is now only a little over a month away. If you are planning to do the Prairie Gran Fondo then the time is approaching for you to get signed up and commit to a distance – nothing like having a goal to get out and spend some time on two wheels – especially with weather like we have had this week.
Monday May 25th, 2015 is Bike Day in Canada. Try to spend some time on your favorite bike to start next week of the right way. http://www.canadabikes.org/
Speaking of Canada day biking. We are working out the details for the inclusion of a NEW Velopalooza Canada Day Event!!! Saskatoon Cycling Club has joined forces with Velopalooza 2015 to help host several events. On July 1st, the Saskatoon Cycling Club will lead a ramble along the TransCanada Trail from Saskatoon to Wanuskewan including the recently completed trail portion from 71st to the Wanuskewan heritage site. If you would like a longer romp then link up with the Fatlanders FatTire Bridgade who are also planning a ride on (or single track alongside) the TransCanada Trail but will start at Chief Whitecap (or possibly Cranberry Flats) and make their way to Wanuskewan.
Velopalooza is excited to have the cooperation of these two new clubs for 2015. The Saskatoon Cycling Club has been representing recreational cyclists since 1971. They host rides and tours for the non-competitive recreational cyclist. Head over to their website at Saskatoon Cycling Club and check out the upcoming 2015 Great Annual Saskatchewan Pedal (http://www.saskcycling.ca/GASP/gasp.html) – a recreational tour clear across the province – they have it all mapped and figured out for you!!! They also have a whole Tour de Toon mapped out with 21 stage rides in and around Saskatoon that you can complete at your leisure. Saskatoon Cycling Club will also be hosting another Velopalooza event on the final day of the Superweek – Wednesday July 8th. We will update with details on this neat new addition in an upcoming post.
Finally, a huge congratulations to Cycledelia Road Racing Club on their 25th Anniversary Bikes on Broadway. Over 100 athletes from across the Western Provinces attended and were plenty challenged with the grueling ascents of Mt. NorthEastWind and sunny circuits of Broadway. Many Velopaloozians were out racing, volunteering, or spectating.
Velopaloooza 2015 – Saskatoon’s Superweek of Cycling will this year showcase the Great Plains Region qualifier for North American Hardcourt Bike Polo on Saturday July 4th, and Sunday July 5th at the newly renovated Optimist Park court – off 19th St and Avenue J. Find out more about Hardcourt Bike Polo and get a sense of skill involved in this short video clip:
Teams from Manitoba, Alberta, Saskatchewan and the Northern States will be playing for spots at the NA Hardcourt Bike Polo Championships. Bike Polo is a fast growing sport that has a great vibe and the local community is very welcoming of newcomers. http://globalnews.ca/news/1360473/bike-polo-culture-is-growing-in-saskatoon/
We have your Velopalooza Saturday all mapped out for July 4th: Ride some gravel at the Saskatoon Gravelo in the morning, then pick up your SIGA Prairie Gran Fondo Race Package, then head over to Optimist park to check out some of the action – this is super fun and entertaining sport to watch. Maybe you can even get in on a demo and try some of the skills for yourself. Drop back down on Sunday after the Gran Fondo to watch the finals.
